Want to catch your first wave or improve your surfing on one of the most beautiful spots in the Basque Country? La Vague Basque Surf School welcomes you on the legendary Côte des Basques beach, in the heart of Biarritz. A French Surfing Federation-certified school running since 1997, we offer surf lessons in Biarritz for all levels, from complete beginners to experienced surfers, led by state-certified instructors.
The Côte des Basques is an ideal place to learn: its long sandy beach offers a variety of waves, so everyone finds a level that suits them, in a stunning setting.
Group surf lessons
Our most popular way to discover surfing. Each lesson brings together a maximum of 8 people per instructor, for close, personal guidance. For 1.5 hours, your instructor stays in the water with you: guiding, advising and supporting you wave after wave. Board and wetsuit are included. It’s the best way to feel your first rides safely.
Private surf lessons
For faster progress and tailored coaching, choose a private lesson (1 to 4 people). The instructor adapts the entire session to your level, fitness and the day’s conditions. Ideal if you want to progress quickly, work on specific techniques, or simply learn in a small group with friends or family.
How a lesson works
We focus on time in the water. After a warm-up and a safety briefing on the beach, you head into the water with your instructor, who stays by your side to position you, launch you and correct you in real time. Every participant gets personal coaching, a skills assessment and a better understanding of the ocean. Our goal: to make you independent in the water.
Equipment & safety
All equipment is provided. You’ll be fitted with a wetsuit suited to the season (the school is open from April to December) and a foam board that makes it easier to find your balance and confidence when starting out. Your instructor then adapts your board to your level and the day’s waves. Our instructors hold the French State Diploma in surfing (BEES) and lifeguard certification (BNSSA): you surf safely, in expert hands.
Prices
Group surf lessons start at €45 in low season (€50 in high season), equipment included. Private lessons start at €100 (€150 in high season) for one person, with group rates available. Full details and online booking are on our booking pages.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to know how to swim? Yes, you need to be comfortable in the water. No prior surfing experience is required to start.
What age can start? Children aged 5-9 are welcome in our « Jardin de Vagues » programme in July and August. Regular lessons and courses are suited to teenagers and adults.
What should I bring? A swimsuit (to wear under the wetsuit), a towel and sunscreen. Everything else (board, wetsuit) is provided.
When do lessons take place? Times depend on the tides and conditions, and are confirmed when you book. The school is open from April to December.
